Dorm Fire Safety | Back to School

It’s that time of year again! Before you know it the summer will end and your children will be heading back to school. Many teens and young adults will begin their college experience this year. You’ve probably added notebooks, textbooks, bedding, mini fridge, and etc. to your back-to-school shopping list. But have you added an escape ladder or a first aid kit? You’ve also probably discussed the importance of being safe at college, like never walking alone at night or not drinking too much. But have you discussed what to do in case there is a fire?
According to NFPA, “In 2010-2014, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated annual average of 3,970 structure fires in dormitories, fraternities, sororities, and barracks.” The leading cause of fires in dorms is cooking equipment.
Before your child begins or returns to college, it is important to educate them on dorm fire safety. Your children should:
- Know multiple exit routes.
- Identify where Fire Extinguishers are located.
- Always exit the building when the fire alarm sounds.
- Not smoke inside buildings.
- Use precaution when cooking
In most cases, college is a teen’s first time living on their own. While you may assume your child is aware of fire safety, it will only help to reinforce these potentially lifesaving tips.
When preparing for back to school consider adding the following items to you shopping list.
- 3 or 2 Story Escape Ladder
- Fire Blanket
- Smoke Alarm
- Flashlight
- First Aid Kit
- Burn Gel
